Innovativa lyftlösningar på Empack 4-5 Oktober 2023: För en övergång till hållbara förpackningslösningar

The transition to green energy is crucial for the future health of the planet. But it requires vast amounts of copper. The growth in electric cars and renewable technologies in particular demand high volumes of the metal - which is often mined in South America, at a huge cost to the environment. One of the most important raw materials for key technologies in the energy transition is copper. For years now, the metal’s price has been rising steadily, and has now reached unprecedented levels. Copper mines and copper production is a billion-dollar business. But what’s the impact on the climate?

Keeping Warm the Roman Way

The ancient Romans had several methods for keeping their homes warm, including the earliest-known forms of central heating, space heaters, hot toddies, and a simple strategy of moving toward the sun. They vacated the northern-facing rooms that they enjoyed in the summer and inhabited the western-facing rooms that captured more warmth and light during the winter.

How we drive sustainable development

WBCSD is the premier global, CEO-led community of over 200 of the world’s leading sustainable businesses working collectively to accelerate the system transformations needed for a net-zero, nature positive, and more equitable future.

We do this by engaging executives and sustainability leaders from business and elsewhere to share practical insights on the obstacles and opportunities we currently face in tackling the integrated climate, nature and inequality sustainability challenge; by co-developing “how-to” CEO-guides from these insights; by providing science-based target guidance including standards and protocols; and by developing tools and platforms to help leading businesses in sustainability drive integrated actions to tackle climate, nature and inequality challenges across sectors and geographical regions.

Environmental impact assessment

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure aims at reducing or preventing the negative environmental impact of projects.
Examples of projects include highways, landfill sites and power plants.

Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)

Environmental management system

A means of ensuring effective implementation of an environmental management plan or procedures and compliance with environmental policy objectives and targets. A key feature on any effective environmental management system (EMS) is the preparation of documented system procedures and instructions to ensure effective communication and continuity of implementation. There are certification systems for EMS ISO 14001 and EC's EMAS scheme (EMAS is now compatible with ISO 14001) which demonstrate that a system is operated to an internationally recognised standard.

Persistent Organic Pollutants: A Global Issue, A Global Response

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that adversely affect human health and the environment around the world. Because they can be transported by wind and water, most POPs generated in one country can and do affect people and wildlife far from where they are used and released.

ISCC Works Towards a
Sustainable World

ISCC’s mission is to protect forests, high-carbon stock lands and biodiversity, enable waste utilisation and increase traceability.

We believe that sustainable supply chains are crucial to fight the most severe impacts of the climate crisis. Since greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are major contributors to climate change, we also consider the identification and reduction of GHG emissions as an important part of our work.

Our vision is a world without deforestation and a true circular economy in which we stop producing waste in the first place and instead, create circular products and regenerate nature. Sustainable agriculture that increases biodiversity and creates healthy ecosystems is part of this vision as well as a resilient economic system which ends the consumption of finite resources.

Verified Emissions Reduction

Why finance Emission Reductions?

Purchasing Emission Reductions is a core component of responsible climate action for companies and individuals alike. It provides a direct way of contributing to the Paris Climate Agreement’s goal of limiting climate change to ‘well below 2°C.’ For business, financing Gold Standard Emission Reductions can help:

    1. Deliver on Best Practice Climate Action—Contribute to the Paris Climate Agreement through climate finance by purchasing Verified Emission Reductions from projects that also deliver sustainable development benefits, and gain recognition by organisations like CDP and WWF.

    2. Make an impact toward SDG prioritiesFund verified specific SDG impacts from high-impact projects or verify the SDG impacts of your supply chain interventions. Then use these to credibly report on shared value or meet “Net-Positive” goals.

    3. Gain recognition by civil society which is increasingly calling for accountability for an organisation's full carbon footprint as part of Best Practice Corporate Climate Action.

What Is Ecotourism?

Offering market-linked long-term solutions, ecotourism provides effective economic incentives for conserving and enhancing bio-cultural diversity and helps protect the natural and cultural heritage of our beautiful planet.

By increasing local capacity building and employment opportunities, ecotourism is an effective vehicle for empowering local communities around the world to fight against poverty and to achieve sustainable development.

With an emphasis on enriching personal experiences and environmental awareness through interpretation, ecotourism promotes greater understanding and appreciation for nature, local society, and culture.

The Definition.

Ecotourism is now defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). Education is meant to be inclusive of both staff and guests.

Principles of Ecotourism

Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement, participate in and market ecotourism activities should adopt the following ecotourism principles:
  • Minimize physical, social, behavioral, and psychological impacts.
  • Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
  • Generate financial benefits for both local people and private industry.
  • Deliver memorable interpretative experiences to visitors that help raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climates.
  • Design, construct and operate low-impact facilities.
  • Recognize the rights and spiritual beliefs of the Indigenous People in your community and work in partnership with them to create empowerment.

Eco-entrepreneurship: Meaning, Characteristics & Examples

Eco-entrepreneurship: Meaning, Characteristics & Examples – Eco-entrepreneurship, often known as ecopreneurship, is a new type of entrepreneurship. The reason for this rise is the world’s current environmental concerns. Environmental entrepreneurship, green entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship, biosphere entrepreneurship, and eco-entrepreneurship are all names used to describe this notion.

Green Globe Standard

The Green Globe Standard includes 44 core criteria supported by over 380 compliance indicators in four key areas:

1.Sustainable Management
2. Social and Economic
3. Cultural Heritage
4. Environmental

About sustainable products

Making the EU a more resource-efficient, climate neutral, and pollution-free circular economy calls for more sustainable products.

The United Arab Emirates, which will host COP28 in Dubai in December, has missed its own green energy target, Sky News can reveal.

The oil-rich country pledged in 2015 to generate 24% of its electricity from clean sources by 2021 but analysis by Sky News has found that in 2021, the nation had only reached 11% clean power - though that figure jumped to 17.5% in 2022.

In 2015, the WHO listed one of the additives in processed meats as carcinogenic.

That same additive was nearly banned in America in the 1970s – until lobbying from the meat industry discredited the scientists.

We reveal how, to impede or halt regulations on certain additives, lobbyists have been working in the shadows for decades.

At the heart of this strategy are the scientists who collaborate, who receive generous compensation for studies that promote meat consumption. In conjunction with this, those whose work finds health risks associated with meat are ‘shot down’.

From Brittany to Denmark, through California and Wisconsin, director Sandrine Rigaud conducted a year-long investigation on the tactics of the meat industry.

She found out she’d been breathing a cancer-causing gas for over a decade. So why won’t Canada’s health-care system let her get her lungs tested?

Canadians with documented levels of elevated radon in their homes are ineligible for publicly funded lung cancer screening, which is only for heavy smokers.

Romania's struggle with bad waste management and illegal dumps has been a long-standing issue. Cluj County, once home to the notorious illegal garbage dump, Pata Rât, became a focal point of the waste crisis.

With investments of hundreds of millions of Euros, the European Union sought to tackle the issue by mandating the closure of harmful landfills and the introduction of European waste standards. It took authorities 12 years to close and rehabilitate the old landfill in Pata Rât and to open a new waste management center.

But how much has really changed? DW reporter Gönna Ketels delves deep into the details of EU-funded projects, as she confronts the grim realities of waste management in Romania and an intricate web of responsibilities.
